SUPPLIES
  • Dora’s Butterfly Wings Templates
  • Poster board in pink and yellow
  • Pink and yellow glitter glue
  • Pink tissue paper
  • Craft glue
  • Packing tape
  • Stapler
  • Sewing elastic, about 1/2 inch wide and 2 feet long
  • Small amount of white tulle
  • Cardboard (4-inch square)
DIRECTIONS

·  Step 1: Print the templates and enlarge them 150 percent. Cut out the templates and trace the shapes onto pink and yellow poster board. Cut out the poster board pieces. You should have four large pink wing pieces and four small yellow wing pieces.

·  Step 2: Place the pink wing pieces onto a work surface and glue the yellow poster board pieces onto the centers of the pink poster board pieces. Allow to dry.

·  Step 3: Flip the wing pieces upside down and arrange them in the shape of the finished butterfly wing structure: The heart-shaped sections of the top wings face out, and the wider ends of the tear-dropped shaped lower wings face out. Place the bottom wings so they overlap the top wings slightly by about 1 inch. Place the left and right sides of the wings about 1/2 inch apart on your work surface.

· Step 4: Snip the elastic into two 1-foot lengths and staple the ends to the cardboard square, creating loops. These will be the straps for kids to put their arms through. For cmmfort, cover the staples with tape.

·  Step 5: Secure the 4-inch square of cardboard to the center junction of the wings using packing tape. This side of the wings will be against your child’s body, so it won’t be seen.

·  Step 6: Cut the tulle into a rectangle that is about 18 inches x 6 inches. Accordion-fold the tulle lengthwise. Turn the wings right-side up and lay the tulle horizontally across the center junction of the wings. Wrap a folded strip of tissue paper vertically across the tulle and the center junction of the wings, making sure to wrap it around and in back of the wing structure. The tissue paper strip should meet and cover the cardboard square in back. Glue the tissue paper strip to the cardboard square at the back of the wings to secure the tulle in place. Allow to dry.

·  Step 7: With the glitter glue, pipe around the perimeters of the wings and the yellow pieces. You can also add glitter to the tissue paper binder between the wings.
